Murchison Falls National Park

You've been dreaming of your safari for so long and now it's finally about to begin. You'll meet your guide who will tell you everything you need to know to get your safari started. We're as excited as you are to get your trip underway.

The main reason people visit Murchison Falls National Park is to see the spectacular namesake waterfall formed by the Nile as it explodes through a narrow cleft in the Rift Valley Escarpment. But Uganda’s largest national park is also a highly rewarding safari destination, whether you're hoping for dramatic encounters with the Big Five (all but one of which, rhino, is present) or more interested in spotting local specialties such as the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, the spindly-limbed patas monkey, or the dashingly colorful red-throated bee-eater and white-crested turaco.

This morning you will join us for one of our favorite activities when we go rhino tracking.

Afternoon

We break our game drive this afternoon with a stop at the famous Top of the Falls, a stunning viewpoint from where you can truly appreciate the primal power of Murchison Falls.

Early Morning

Get up before the sun and go on an early morning game drive in Murchison Falls National Park. It’s when animals are active and the light is at its most beautiful.

Afternoon

We join a boat trip on the Nile, gliding past hippos, a profusion of waterbirds, and wildlife coming to drink, before arriving at the base of the spectacular Murchison Falls.

Evening

Join us on an evening game drive in Murchison Falls National Park. It's one of the highlights of being on safari and a great time to see animals in the best light.

A night drive in Murchison Falls National Park provides an opportunity to look for various nocturnal carnivores on the prowl in search of prey.

Pakuba Safari Lodge

We will stay at Pakuba Safari Lodge, where you can enjoy views over a lushly vegetated stretch of the Albert Nile from the swimming pool and balcony. It's easy to see why this was chosen as the site of one of Murchison Falls' first two lodges back in the 1960s, especially as it provides easy access to the national park’s most reliably productive game-drive circuit.

Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park is best known for its population of around 1,000 chimpanzees, man's closest genetic relative. The park is home to a dozen other primate species, including Uganda mangabey, a type of monkey that is unique to Uganda and difficult to see anywhere other than Kibale. It supports a dazzling forest birdlife, with 370 species recorded, ranging from the outrageously colorful great blue turaco to the secretive green-breasted pitta.

Your base for exploring Kibale National Park is Turaco Treetops, a small and tranquil lodge that combines a wonderful forested setting on the park boundary with luxurious accommodation in spacious and stylish cottages. All cottages come with private balconies looking into the forest canopy, and beyond, to the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains. There's also a large attractive swimming pool and a wonderful double-story dining area and lounge set below a tall thatched roof. Bird-watchers will be in their element here, and a variety of monkeys pass through with some regularity.

Day 4 & 5

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Protecting 95 mammal and 610 bird species, more than any other location in Uganda, Queen Elizabeth National Park ranks among Africa's most biodiverse safari destinations. Lions prey on the antelope that graze the grassy plains. Hippos and elephants are prolific around the larger lakes and waterways. Salt-encrusted crater lakes provide a seasonal feeding ground to flamingos and other wading birds. There are also large tracts of rainforest inhabited by chimpanzees, giant forest hogs and various monkeys.

Come with us on a forest trek to search for chimpanzees this morning in Kibale National Park. Spending time with these creatures is sure to be a highlight of your safari.

Evening

Come with us on an evening game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The light is ideal for photos, temperatures are cooler and the animals are beginning to stir.

Early Morning

In Queen Elizabeth National Park, your early morning game drive gets you close to the wildlife when they’re most active, and the landscapes are at their most beautiful.

Afternoon

Birders will love our boat trip on the Kazinga Channel this afternoon, but there's plenty of general wildlife activity, with hippo, elephant and buffalo being especially common.

Evening

Animals are out and about, the light is often perfect, and temperatures are cooler when you join us on our evening game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Night

A night drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park provides an opportunity to look for various nocturnal carnivores on the prowl in search of prey.

Optional Day 5

Morning

You'll learn a lot about lions and leopards, and stand a very good chance of seeing both when you join a tracking excursion with the Queen Elizabeth Predator Project.

Elephant Hab Lodge

Relax at Elephant Hab Lodge, which offers stylish accommodation in thatched cottages on the edge of a lushly vegetated gorge carved by the Kyambura River as it flows along the border of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Although the lodge lies within walking distance of Kyambura village, it has a real bush feel, thanks to the expansive views over the savannah and the likelihood of spotting elephants and other wildlife.

Day 6

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

You don't need to stray far off the beaten path in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to understand how Uganda's premier gorilla-tracking destination acquired its English name. The steep slopes and dense substrata of ferns and shrubs in this magnificent highland forest can make for challenging walking conditions. Fortunately, the park has a good network of footpaths allowing you to look for its diverse wildlife, not only mountain gorillas but also 10 other primate, six forest antelope, 350 bird and 200-plus butterfly species.

Ishasha Sector

We visit the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, whose celebrated tree-climbing lions tend to favor a few specific acacia and fig trees well known to our knowledgeable guides.

Locating tree-climbing lions will be the main goal of our game drive this morning in Ishasha, though we also hope to see elephant, buffalo, antelope and a wide variety of birds.

Lake Bunyonyi

Kick back and relax on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi, hike on the steep hills that hem it in, or take a boat out to some of the 29 islands that protrude from its surface. Bunyonyi means ‘Place of Small Birds’, and the birdlife here is indeed plentiful. There's also no better place in Africa to see otters swim past as you enjoy a lakeside drink or meal.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

When you go mountain gorilla trekking, you'll hike through the forest and then spend time in the presence of these remarkable and soulful family groups. The walking can be strenuous, but you'll never forget your experience here.
